On bändejä, joista en tiedä paskaakaan, ja sitten on bändejä kuten Overkill, johon olen suhtaunut intohimolla jo pitkään ja josta tiedän myös paljon. Ironbound on bändin ensimmäinen levy Nuclear Blastille ja järjestyksessään yhtyeen 16. albumi. Levyjen lukumäärä on jo sinänsä huomionarvoinen seikka, sillä kun katsoo Overkillin aikalaisten kuten Testamentin, Exodusin, Metallican tai Slayerin diskografioita, ei niistä yksikään ole niin pitkä kuin Overkillillä.

Nuclear Blast mainostaa Ironboundia Overkillin paluuna thrash-juurille. Siis mitä?!? En ymmärrä mitenkään, mitä lafka on tällä mainospuheella hakenut, sillä mielestäni Ironbound kuulostaa kaikin puolin siltä miltä Overkill on tavannut viime vuosina kuulostaa. On kuitenkin pakko todeta, että Ironbound ei ole lähelläkään sitä mahtavuutta, jota From The Underground...And Below edusti, sillä kyseinen albumi lieneekin kokonaisuutena yhtyeen paras sen tähänastisella uralla.

Minua ihmetyttää joka tapauksessa se, kuinka väkevä, vittuuntunut ja voimallinen laulaja Bobby Blitz edelleen on; varsinkin kun ottaa huomioon, että mies ei ole enää mikään nuorukainen ja on ehtinyt esimerkiksi selvitä varsin aggressiivisesta nenäsyövästä. Hänen äänensä on edelleen huippuluokkaa ja on aina ollut yksi Overkillin kovimpia valtteja. Tähän voidaan lisätä se, että Blitz on yksi alan karismaattisimmista, parhaiten itsensä ilmaisevista ja terävimmistä keulakuvista, joka on kuin metallin vastine Al Pacinolle.

Kyseessä on siis hyvä levy, mutta ei ainakaan minun korvissani mikään ajaton Overkill-klassikko. Ironbound on nopea ja raju, mutta bändille tyypillinen ilkeä groove jää valitettavasti taka-alalle. Jos Overkill on halunnut siirtyä old-schoolimpaan suuntaan, heidän olisi pitänyt yksinkertaistaa riffejä ja sovituksia ja lisätä hieman lisää keskitempoa kokonaisuuteen.

Now there are some bands that I don't know shit about and then there are bands like Overkill, where I consider myself a diehard and damn near expert. Ironbound is Overkill's debut for Nuclear Blast and marks their 16th career album to date. That in itself is remarkable, when you consider the band's contemporaries from the same thrash metal boom period of the mid 80's, such as Testament, Exodus, Metallica and Slayer - all of whom have far less in their discography as compared to the mighty Overkill.

Nuclear Blast touts Ironbound as Overkill's return to their thrash roots. Huh?!? I have no idea what that plug was supposed to mean, as Ironbound sounds very much like Overkill has sounded over the past several years, and does not deviate from their current formula really in any way, shape or form. That said, Ironbound is not anywhere close to From The Underground...And Below, which quite arguably stands as perhaps the band's brightest moment to date as an all-around opus.

What amazes me is that Bobby Blitz is still as potent, pissed off and powerful as ever depite surviving a very aggressive bout with nasal cancer and the aging process that hits us all. His voice is top notch and has always been one of the main grenades in Overkill's frontal attack. Add to that the fact that Blitz is one of the most charismatic, well-spoken and sharp frontmen in the game, and you have metal's answer to Al Pacino staring you in the face.

A good album to be sure, but not an all-time Overkill classic, at least not at this point in my ears. Ironbound is fast and furious, but the nasty groove the band has been known for is secondary here. If Overkill wanted to go old school, they should have stripped down the arrangements and simplified the riffs, adding a bit more mid-tempo stuff into the mix.
