Alternative rockin legenda Masters of Realitya ei ole helppo kuvailla. Jotkut saattaisivat kutsua musiikkiaan stoner rockiksi, mutta mielestäni heillä on liikaa pop-rock-elementtejä, jotta stoner voisi olla todenmukainen kuvaus. MoR todellakin pitää kiinni musiikissaan vilisevistä pop-rock-viitteistä. Jokin tässä bändissä muistuttaa myös Queens Of The Stone Agesta, sen riitasointuisesta ja hapsuisesta vibasta. Kenties stoner-kategoria voidaan selittää MoR:n rytmiikan mantramaisuudella, mutta oli miten oli.

Absinthe, Jim And Me'n kaltaiset kappaleet ovat mainiota kuunneltavaa, sillä meininki niissä on virtaviivainen ja koukuttavan melodinen. Worm In The Silk puolestaan kuulostaa toisteiselta ja tavanomaiselta, sillä sen pääteema kuluu nopeasti puhki. Laulu kappaleessa on tarkoituksellisen apaattista ja hahmotonta, ja pienistä melodisista koukuista huolimatta biisin yleistunnelma on jälleen tarkoituksellisen lättänä, joten tätä kappaletta varmasti joko rakastaa tai vihaa. Dreamtime Stomp sykkii kuin omapäinen kasvain, eikä kappaleen hipahtavat sävytkään jää pimentoon. Testify to Love kuuluu vastaavasti levyn parhaimmistoon erittäin tunnelmallisen ja groovaavan kertosäkeensä ansiosta.

Hyvinkin trippaileva kokonaisuus siis on kyseessä. Jammailevuus ja tunteikkuus ovat yhtä lailla avainsanoja, ja MoR on todellakin kotonaan näiden tunnelmien parissa. Hauskaa kuunneltavaa ja laadukas kokonaisuus kaikin puolin hyvällä tuotannolla varustettuna.

Alternative rock legends Masters of Reality are a hard band to categorize. Some might say stoner rock, but I say there are too many pop rock elements here to justify that call. Indeed MoR have keen pop rock sensibilities, with catchy runs to and fro. There is something about this band that brings to mind QOTSA also, with the discordant harmonies and fringe-like vibe. Perhaps there is a certain mantra-like quality to the rhythms of MoR that would lend to the stoner equation, but nonetheless.

Songs like Absinthe, Jim And Me make for good listening, with a fluid roll of audio candy streaming through the ears intertwined with catchy melodies. Worm In The Silk on the other hand comes off as repetitive and mundane in the long haul as the theme is quickly worn out. The vocals here are apathetic and atonal on purpose, although there is a slight melodic hook the overall feel is “flat” intentionally, making for a love it or hate it scenario. Dreamtime Stomp throbs like a persistent tumor with hippie shake written all over it. Testify to Love is one of the top songs here, with a very moody and groovy chorus.

A rather trippy album overall. Jamming and emotional imagery abound, and MoR definitely know what they are doing in terms of the art that they produce. A fun listen and a quality product with good production all around.
