Aina toisinaan indie-lafkat onnistuvat signaamaan todellisia helmiä. Tässä on tällä kertaa onnistunut saksalainen underground-yhtiö Elektrohasch Records, jonka hieno kiinnitys on nimeltään Highway Child. Huonoakin huonompi kansitaide saa pelkäämään pahinta - eikä todellakaan tee oikeutta kokonaisuudelle, mutta itse Highway Childin musiikki on todella omaperäistä, tarttuvaa, reilusti retroa ja rankasti rokkaavaa.
 
Kööpenhaminalaisbändissä on oikeastaan samanlaista vibaa kuin Wolfmotherissa, sekoitettuna vielä ripauksella Rolling Stonesia ja Hendrixiä, mutta toisaalta yhtye on myös riittävän omaperäinen. Highway Child ei todellakaan kopioi mitään yksittäistä bändiä, vaan kirjoittaa itse komeat kappaleensa ja soittaa ne vielä kaikin puolin pätevästi. Bändille onkin kumarrettava siitä syystä, että eivät ole tässä suhteessa ylittäneet aitaa sen matalimmasta kohdasta.
 
Vielä hämmästyttävämpää on itse asiassa se, että levyllä ei ole yhtäkään heikkoa vetoa. Jokaisessa biisissä on jotain erityistä, niin sanotusti lihaa luiden päällä, ja siksi kiekkoa onkin mukava pureskella. Avausraita Lonelytime Bluesissa on hitunen QOTSA-meininkiä, mutta jo räväkkä Change Yourself vie ajatukset jonnekin ihan muualle. Kenties bändiä voisi kuitenkin parhaiten kuvata QOTSA:n ja Wolfmotherin sekoitukseksi. Highclass Bitchissä on heilutusta ja jopa seksuaalista suhinaa riittävästi, mikä tekeekin biisistä rentoudessaan hauskan. Myös Love For Salessa on siisti viba, kun taas Just Like You rullaa eteenpäin kovemmalla höyryllä.

Kaiken kaikkiaan kyseessä on erittäin hyvä ja piristävä albumi, johon todellakin kannattaa tutustua. Siistiä ja nautinnollista kyydistä alusta loppuun. Älkää antako paskan kansitaiteen hämätä!

Once in a blue moon some indie joints manage to sign a true gem. Such is the case this time around with German cult underground label Elektrohasch Records and Highway Child respectively. Marred only in part by a totally shit album cover sleeve that does absolutely nothing ­ no justice at all ­ to the product, Highway Child is highly original, catchy, retro as fuck and rocking off the rails.

Hailing from Copenhagen, this band carries the same kind of vibe as Wolfmother per se, mixed with some Rolling Stones and Hendrix, but with tons of their own thing in there for good measure. Highway Child really doesn't copy any band that comes to mind, with solid songwriting and great musicianship all around. Give these fellas points for taking the road less traveled and making it work, folks!

What's even more amazing is the fact that there are no lemons in the mix. Every song has something to it, with meat on the proverbial bone and something to sink one's teeth into. Opening track Lonelytime Blues had me thinking QOTSA for a moment, but the stomp of Change Yourself morphed into something completely different. Perhaps the best picture I can draw for you about this band is a mix of QOTSA and Wolfmother. The shake and shuffle of Highclass Bitch has a definitive sexual swagger to it, making for a fun track in its laid-back coolness. Love For Sale has a cool vibe too, and Just Like You rolls along like a stream of groove.

All in all, a very good and refreshing album that is highly worth checking out. A good ride from start to finish and highly enjoyable. Don't let the shitty cover sleeve fool you.
