Please Experience Wolfmother on voimakkaasti iskevä, hypnoottinen ja retro audiovisuaalimatka. Simppeli taustakangas ja triokokoonpano jättävät Wolfmotherin omien vahvuuksiensa varaan kaiken ylimääräisen loistaessa poissaolollaan. Kieltämättä bändi onkin varsin tiukka yksikkö, vieläpä varsin omalaatuinen sellainen. Mielikuvaosastolla tämä on vähän kuin AC/DC soittamassa Led Zeppelinia, joskin vokalisti muistuttaa enemmän Robert Plantia.
Useissa kappaleissa bändi groovaa melkeinpä ilkeän oloisesti. Suuri osa julkaisun materiaalista on luonnollisesti peräisin bändin eponyymiltä levyltä, kyseessähän on yhtyeen tähän mennessä ainoa pitkäsoitto. Kenties voidaankin esittää kysymys DVD:n tarpeellisuudesta yhden ainoan studioalbumin jälkeen. Eihän siinä paljon järkeä ole. Kolmen levyn jälkeen DVD:n jo ymmärtäisi, mutta ei yhden tai kahden lätyn jälkeen. Ainakaan materiaalin määrällä tai bändin kokemuksella ei tätä DVD-julkaisua voida oikeuttaa.
Yleisö Sydneyssä, Australiassa ottaa bändin innokkaasti vastaan, ovathan he "kotikylän menestyneitä poikia", kuten Johnny Knoxville heidät esitteli. Basisti/kosketinsoittaja Chris Ross varastaa show'n pomppimalla vauhkona ympäriinsä, kun taas kitaristi/vokalisti Andrew Stockdale tuntuu joutuvan keskittymään tekemiseensä tarkemmin hoitaakseen ruutunsa kunnialla. Bändin Led Zeppelin -henkisyys on itse asiassa hämmästyttävää, kun siihen kiinnittää tarkemmin huomiota. Stockdalen äänen vibraatto saattaa joidenkin mielestä menettää tehoaan, mutta siinä onkin kyse makuasioista.
Tämä DVD on miellyttävä katsaus tuoreeseen bändiin, jolla on potentiaalia jatkaa suosionsa eksponentiaalista kasvatusta rock-maailmassa - ainakin jos Wolfmother ei koe The Darkness -syndroomaa. Tällöin hittiherkkää ykköslevyä seuraisi pahasti floppaava kakkoslevy. Kuten sanottua, DVD:n julkaisu tässä vaiheessa uraa ei ole ainakaan täysin perusteltua, mutta ilmeisesti lehmää on lypsettävä niin kauan kuin maitoa riittää. Laatujulkaisustahan tässä on joka tapauksessa kyse.
Please Experience Wolfmother is a throbbing, hypnotic, retro audiovisual journey. With its simplistic stage backdrop and trio ensemble, the strengths of Wolfmother are left for the band members themselves to showcase, with no frills and distractions. Indeed, this is a case of one tight unit, who have got their own ”thing” down pat. This is like AC/DC playing Led Zeppelin to some degree, except the vocalist is a lot more like Robert Plant.
The groove is downright nasty in most songs, and that said the mass amount of material here is off of their initial album Wolfmother, as one would expect considering they only have one album out. There's a point that baffles me however: Why would you want to put out a live DVD after ONE album? There's no point in that. After three albums, I could understand a live album or DVD, but not one or two. There's just not enough justification in terms of material or experience to back up a DVD this early in a band's career.
The crowd in Sydney, Australia is clearly hot for their ”hometown boys done good” as Johnny Knoxville introduced them. Bassist/keyboardist Chris Ross steals the show with his frantic bouncing around, as vocalist Andrew Stockdale clearly has to focus on both his guitar playing and singing to get the job done in convincing fashion. The Led Zeppelin parallels are astounding when you really listen close to this band. The vibrato in Stockdale's voice might begin to wear thin with some people, but there's something to be said for discerning tastes.
This DVD is a good look at a fresh band, who has the potential to continue their meteoric rise in the world of rock as we know it. Unless, that is, Wolfmother experience's The Darkness syndrome, where their first album hits the stars and their second album flops like a wet dishrag. Like I said earlier, this is way too early for a band to be putting out a DVD, but hey, enjoy it while it lasts anyway! Excellent stuff, all things considered.
