John Garcian pomottama Hermano on saanut ulos kolmannen täyspitkänsä ...Into the Exam Room, joka osoittautuukin varsin mainioksi tuotokseksi. Aiemmin Kyussissa ja Unidassa mainetta niittänyt Garcia osaa yhä tehdä vokaaleistaan voimallisia ja pirullisen miehekkäitä. Omalla alallaan John Garcia on kertakaikkisen lyömätön kaveri. Kullaksi kaikki hänen kosketukselleen altistunut ei välttämättä muutu, mutta stoner-henkisesti rockaavan musiikin parissa hänellä on kieltämättä tietynlaista Midaksen kosketusta.
...Into the Exam Room on varsin moni-ilmeinen albumi, joka keinahtelee aina laiskanpuoleisista epäballadeista kyltymättömästi groovaaviin jyräpaloihin. Esimerkkinä toimikoon Our Desert Homen intropala - jossa kenties gay-kulttuuriakin tyttömäisesti sivalletaan, ennen kuin testosteronin katkuinen pääriffi potkaisee rallin varsinaisesti käyntiin. Sen jälkeen ääneen pääsee myös itse Garcia, jonka ääntelyssä on raspia ja terävyyttä kuin lasinsirpaleissa. Kentuckyssa mies äännähtelee kuin uroshanhi, eikä biisistä noin muutenkaan groovea puutu. Rintasulat röyhistyvät tämän ääniaallon vaikutuksesta automaattisesti. Toinen huippuraita on Left Side Bleeding, jonka tahdissa sopisi varmasti sovitella erimielisyys jos toinenkin. Samalla biisi taitaa olla myös levyn raskain veto. Adoption Boyssa lipaistaan jo psykedelian puolelle, mutta raskassoutuisuus pitää kuitenkin tennarit kiinni maan kamaralla. Hard Working Wall on värikäs ja tarttuvan kertosäkeen omaava kappale, kun taas Exam Roomia on vaikea kuvata millään muulla sanalla kuin "groovaava". Rauhaisammat ja välisoittomaisemmat raidat eivät sitten minuun niin kovasti tehoakaan, mikä ei kuitenkaan tarkoita etteivätkö ne olisi sinänsä mallikkaita ralleja. Kokonaisuuteen ne kuitenkin tekevät pienen loven, vaikka toisaalta ne nostattavatkin todellisiä helmibiisejä yhä huikeampiin korkeuksiin.
Suosittelen Hermanoa kaikille stoner rockista pitäville, jotka eivät säikähdä bändin vastakarvaan etenevää tyyliä. Käsillä on kova levy, ihmiset!
The John Garcia fronted Hermano have released their third LP through Suburban entitled ...Into the Exam Room, and it's quite a dandy if I say so right from the outset. Garcia, formerly of Kyuss and Unida fame, has a knack for making his vocals have potent punch power and machismo galore. In short, John Garcia rocks like nobody's business. Perhaps it would be foolhardy to say everything that Garcia touches turns to gold, but in this stoner rockish genre he admittedly has the Midas touch.
...Into the Exam Room is a rather diverse album, swinging from lazy non-ballads to voracious, groove-infested steamrollers. Take for example the intro bit to Our Desert Home - with it's obviously parody of the gay subculture voicing its effeminate tone - before the testosterone-laden main riff kicks in, followed by Garcia spitting out a more befitting image of manliness fronted by his gruff, sharp, broken glass voice. Or perhaps gander at Kentucky, with more than enough groove to make your bellbottoms flap in the rush of the oncoming audio wave. Another killer cut arises in the form of Left Side Bleeding, truly being an apt number for any a grudge or score that needs to be settled, and standing as perhaps the heaviest song on this album. Adoption Boy is rather psychadelic in tone, but thick enough in sound to keep one's foot tapping. Hard Working Wall is rather colorful with a very catchy chorus, whereas Exam Room is best described as just plain groovy. The more mellow numbers and interludes don't really do it for me, but that doesn't mean they aren't any good. Yet, perhaps there's a bit too much in the way of mellow cuts in between the really good stuff, but in hindsight they only serve to make the real killers stand out even more.
Hermano is a band that I highly recommend to anyone who really likes stoner rockish heavy music, and artists with bravado who aren't afraid to go against the grain. Very good album, this one!
