Ruotsin retrorock-retkue Witchcraft vie mielen 70-luvulle. Bändin soundi on niin orgaaninen ja "vanha", että kuka tahansa Atomic Roosterista, Creamista, Led Zeppelinistä, Budgiesta tai Deep Purplesta välittävä ihastunee näihin jätkiin välittömästi. The Alchemist pistää itse asiassa parin vuoden takaista Firewood-lättyä paremmaksi, sillä muutama vuosi henkistä kasvua todella näkyy bändin soinnissa kypsyytenä.
Hittejä levyltä ei kuitenkaan kannata etsiskellä. Eikä mitään radioystävällisyyteen tai kuluttamisen helppouteen viittaavaa, mikä on todennäköisesti vain ja ainoastaan hyvä asia. Hey Doctor hyppää levyltä korville mukavasti, joskin paljolti varhaisen Black Sabbathin vanavedessä. The Alchemistin biiseistä tässä vedossa on jotain muita ralleja vetoavampaa ja koukukkaampaa. Levyn rennon oloinen nimibiisi muistuttaa Ronnie James Dion aikaisesta Rainbow'sta, joka kohtaa Led Zeppelinin. Biisissä onkin omalaatuinen fiiliksensä. Levy henkii jamittelevuutta sekä vapaata musiikin luomisen tunnetta. Soundi on puolestaan erittäin kaiuton ja siksi orgaanisen juurekas.
Levy ei todennäköisesti vetoa suurempaan yleisöön, ja oikeastaan ajatus Witchcraftista hittibändinä tai The Alchemistista hittilevynä kuulostaakin hieman naurettavalta. Omalla alallaan bändi on kuitenkin luonut hienon albumin; retrohenkeä nykyajassa tuotettuna. Toisaalta, onhan Wolfmotherkin noussut julkisuuteen, joten mikseivät myös nämä jannut...
Sweden's retro rock outfit Witchcraft reminds me of the 70's all over again, live and in living technicolor. The sound of this band is so organic and ”old” that anyone a fan of Atomic Rooster, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Budgie, Deep Purple and the like will dig these guys. In a way, The Alchemist is better than the band's second album Firewood from a few years back, and in so saying it's amazing what a difference a few years can make in the maturity of a band.
There are no hits in the mix here, kiddies. No radio-friendly ditties for easy consumption, and in a way, that's probably a good thing. Somehow Hey Doctor stands out on this album as one of the more distinguishable tracks, albeit in a very early Black Sabbath way. Perhaps out of all the songs on The Alchemist this very track offers the most accessible sound and catch. The laid back title track is a tad reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio era Rainbow meets Led Zeppelin and carries a unique vibe to it. Throughout the album, jams abound, complete with interludes of airy musicianship in every tune. The overall mix is very dry and thereby organic right down its roots.
This stuff is marginal in its appeal simply by nature, and it would be ridiculous to expect the masses to catch on to The Alchemist or to Witchcraft in general. For what it represents and for what it's worth this effort still holds its ground as a fairly strong retro slab done modern style. Maybe if Wolfmother can make it, so can these guys...
