Kappas, Gamma Ray on päättänyt ottaa kenties uransa suurimman riskin julkaisemalla Land of the Free 2 -albumin. Eipä sillä, julkaisihan Helloweenkin jatko-osan omalle Keeper of the Seven Keys -klassikolleen, joten miksipä Gamma Ray yrittäisi tehdä samaa omalle vuoden 1996 alkuperäisteokselleen? Kuten useimmat lukijat tietävät, alkuperäinen Land of the Free oli aikoinaan Gamma Rayn läpimurtolevy, jolle jatko-osan tekeminen on aina riskaabelia.
Avausraita Into the Storm tuo mieleen Insanity and Genius -levyn Last Before the Storm -raidan, mikä on yksinomaan hyvä asia. From The Ashes alkaa hyvinkin voimakkaasti Iron Maiden -hengessä, eikä tribuuttiajatukseltakaan voi täten välttyä, vaikka biisi sittemmin esitteleekin Gamma Rayn tavaramerkkityöskentelyä. Itse asiassa tämä biisi muistuttaa paljon alkuperäisen Land of the Freen materiaalia. Rising Again jatkaa tyylipuhtaalla Gamma Ray -linjalla ollen varsin kipakka ja ärhäkkä ralli. Rainin erinomainen draivi, hieno kertosäe ja hieno soolo-osa tekevät siitä kaikin puolin vahvan kappaleen. Leaving Hell jää kenties hieman tavanomaiseksi ja rutiininomaiseksi Gamma Ray -veisuksi, vaikka biisin melodia tyypillisen vahva onkin. Empress puolestaan kärsii levyn heikoimmasta kertosäkeestä. When the Worldin alussa heilutellaan jälleen Maidenille ennen omimmalle reviirille palaamista. Insurrection on vahvan ja eeppisen luonteensa vuoksi oiva päätösraita, jollain tapaa tärkeän ja suuren kuuloinen kappale.
Kaiken kaikkiaan Land of the Free 2 on mielestäni vähintäänkin sovelias jatko-osa bändin klassikkoalbumille. Levy on täynnä vahvaa biisinkirjoitusta, kristallista inspiraatiota ja loistavaa soitantaa. Melodioiden vahvuus ja toisaalta heikkojen tai edes keskinkertaisten kohtien vähyys saavat ainakin tämän kriitikon innostumaan.
Alas, Gamma Ray has mustered the gusto to release what very well might be the biggest risk of their career in Land of the Free 2. After all, since Helloween decided to do a follow-up to Keeper of the Seven Keys recently, why not Gamma Ray with their own landmark from 1996? As most of you will know, Land of the Free (the original) was Gamma Ray's breakthrough album many moons ago, so this album was surely a touchy risk to take.
Opener Into the Storm brings to mind Last Before the Storm from Insanity and Genius, which is purely a good thing. From The Ashes starts off just like an Iron Maiden song would, perhaps a homage to the greats, turning into trademark Gamma Ray soon enough however. Actually, this song is rather reminiscent of material off of the initial Land of the Free. Rising Again is a strong Gamma Ray trademark cut, fast and furious. Rain stands out as an all-around strong cut with excellent drive and a good chorus with an excellent solo segment. Leaving Hell is a more run by the mill, paint by numbers Gamma Ray track, although the melody throughout is very strong. Empress has possibly the weakest chorus on the whole album. When the World starts off like an Iron Maiden song would, but quickly segues into more modern Gamma Ray. Insurrection stands out as a very strong, rather epic track and is a fitting album closer with a feeling of importance and grandeur.
All in all, Land of the Free 2 is a more than fitting follow-up to the band's landmark V1 album, in my opinion. Strong songwriting, clear inspiration and excellent musicianship abound. Lots of strong melodies and really very few weak or mundane points in the big picture make for a solid grade from this critical source.
