Velvet Revolverin kakkoslätty pyyhkii bändin parin vuoden takaisella debyyttituotoksella lattioita. Contraband-albumiin verrattuna uuden levyn biisit ovat tarkemmin harkittuja, paremmin sovitettuja ja kaikin puolin parempia.
Avausraita Let It Roll koukkaa kuulijan heti mukaansa lihakoukun kaltaisella jämäkkyydellä. Toisaalta She Mine yrittää vielä puhaltaa eloa Contrabandin muistoon. Get Out The Door groovaa pehmeästi mutta viriilisti. American Manin kohtalona on jäädä levyn heikoimmaksi lenkiksi, sillä biisi latistuu loppupeleissä varsin kliseiseksi ja sovitukseltaan turhan turvalliseksi. Mary Mary on puolestaan levyn kärkipään materiaalia tarjoillen kuulijoille upean prechoruksen, mutta harmittavasti hieman lattean kertosäkeen. Just Sixteenissä on loisteliasta draivia ja perseelle potkivaa riffittelyä, eikä kertosäkeessäkään säästellä. Itse asiassa, Motley Crue lauloi aikanaan "She's only fifteen and she's the reason that I can't sleep", kun taas Winger runoili "She's only seventeen - Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me". Mikä sitten mahtaakaan olla alaikäraja niin sanotusti lapsukaisen viattomuuden tallaamiselle, kaikki voimme itseksemme ajatella, leikkivätkö nämä yhtyeet jossain määrin tulella.
Yhteenvetona voidaan kuitenkin sanoa, että Libertad on huomattavasti edeltäjäänsä coolimpi albumi. Biisit rullaavat paremmin, ja kokonaiskuva hahmottuu ainakin itselleni miellyttävämmäksi. Biisijärjestys tuntuu olevan tarkkaan harkittu, sillä jokainen kappale tuntuisi eroavan toisista riittävästi. Vaikka vokalisti Scott Weilandin ääniala rajoittuu kahteen oktaaviin (eipä sillä, myös allekirjoittanut hiihtelee samalla äänialalla, kuten tekevät myös Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Lemmy, James Hetfield ja lukemattomat muut), Slash ja kumppanit ovat irrottaneet työkaluistaan ja yhtyetovereistaan menestyksellisen tuotoksen, joka korostaa myös bändin keulahahmon vahvempia puolia. Myös tämä kertoo jotain osaltaan bändin nerokkuudesta.
Velvet Revolver's second effort beats the hell out of their initial outing Contraband from a few years back. The songwriting has far
superceeded that on Contraband and each song is clearly better thought out and arranged with more meat on the proverbial bone.
Opener Let It Roll starts things off with a hooky catch to it. She Mine on the other hand is something that reminds me more of the Contraband
sound. Get Out The Door grooves with suave and panache. American Man is probably the blandest song on this album, as somehow it's just too
cliche, with a "safe" arrangement and arguably nothing new to offer. Mary Mary is one of the best songs on the album, with a superb
pre-chorus but an anti-climactic chorus itself. Just Sixteen is another very strong track with a slick drive and kick-ass riff and chorus. That
said, Motley Crue sang "She's only fifteen and she's the reason that I can't sleep", whereas Winger sang "She's only seventeen - Daddy says
she's too young, but she's old enough for me". Maybe someone could really explain what the legal age is for corrupting a minor in various
countries, as these aforementioned groups seem to like playing with fire to some extent.
Still, overall Libertad is a much "cooler" album than its predecessor. The songs roll much smoother and the big picture is very satisfying to the ear. Song placement has been very well thought out and each tune offers enough diversity to keep things interesting. Whereas Scott Weiland is truthfully rather limited in vocal range, wading in the two octave range (that's no pot shot, Yours Truly reflects the same category of lead man - joining a group consisting of the likes of Alice Cooper,
Rob Zombie, Lemmy, James Hetfield and countless others), Slash & Co. have made the most out of the tools available and thus have successfully
built their product around the strengths of their frontman. Very smart, and really the only way to go.
