USA:n Nevadasta ponnistava Hemlock esittää aggressiivista ja repivää, modernia metalcoreen vivahtavaa metallia. Vaikka bändi ei tyypillisintä metalcorea olekaan, voi heidän juurensa kuitenkin assosioida Biohazardin kaltaisiin NYC-hardcore-bändeihin ja brutaalimman suunnan metalcoreen. Hemlock on myös ehtinyt kiertää mm. Slayerin, Slipknotin, Lamb of Godin ja Hatebreedin kanssa, ja myös näiden bändien vaikutus eittämättä Hemlockin tuotoksilta kuuluu.
Tämän päivän massoista Hemlockin erottaa heidän hieman positiivishenkisempi lyyrinen lähestymistapa. Tämä tulee selkeimmin ilmi vaikkapa Weakman Suiciden itsemurhan vastaisesta viestistä. Myös tarttuvia riffejä ja sovituksia löytyy, kuten hieman hassunkurisessa, tahattoman hauskassa Nobody Knowsissa. Avausraita My Eyes Itch on levyn raidoista toinen, joka muistuu mieleen levyn pyörähdettyä läpi. Becoming onnistuu muistuttamaan hieman jopa In Flamesista, mutta tuo mielikuva vetäytyy nopeasti mielen taka-alalle. Toki levylle olisi mahtunut useampiakin huippubiisejä, sillä tällaisenaan kokonaiskuva on kelvollinen, eikä missään tapauksessa loistelias. Potentiaalia Hemlockilta tuntuisi löytyvän, mutta vielä tällä kertaa yritys jää hieman pinnalliseksi.
Kansitaideosastolla bändi ei puolestaan sympatioitani kerää. Jos bändiä käsittelee kokonaisuutena, johon kuuluvat niin imago, soundit, logo, kansitaide, biisinkirjoitustaidot kuin uskottavuuskin, voidaan sanoa, että Hemlockin olisi paras paneutua hieman intensiivisemmin myös kansitaide- ja logo-osastoon. Musiikkifanin ostopäätös voi olla kiinni hyvinkin pienistä jutuista, varsinkin kun on kyse hieman tuntemattomammista bändeistä. Levynkannet ovat useimmille yhtä kuin ensivaikutelma koko yhtyeestä, ja jos tällä osastolla epäonnistutaan, toista tilaisuutta ei bändille välttämättä enää suoda.
Pientä hienosäätöä siis biiseihin, suurimittaisempaa tuunausta puolestaan ulkonäöllisiin ja visuaalisiin seikkoihin, ja kenties Hemlockista vielä jonain päivänä kirjoitetaan suuremmalla kirjasinkoolla!
Hailing from Nevada in the good ol' USA, Hemlock play aggressive, rip'n'tear modern metalcore-like metal. While not entirely metalcore, their influences may be found in both NYC hardcore akin to Biohazard and more brutal metalcore. Having had the opportunity to tour with bands like Slayer, Slipknot, Lamb of God and Hatebreed, all of these can be heard as influences in Hemlock's sound.
The thing that strikes me about Hemlock is that their lyrics seem to be more positive in vibe and overall message than many contempoaries. Take the slant of anti-suicide in a song like Weakman Suicide and you might get a better picture. There are a few catchy riffs and arrangements here, such as the somewhat goofy and inadvertently fun Nobody Knows. Opener My Eyes Itch is another example of a memorable song which stands out when all is said and done on the CD deck. Becoming has a strand in it that reminds me a bit of In Flames, but that fades away pretty quick. Perhaps a few more really standout numbers would have helped the big picture here, as although much of the songs are good, they aren't great. It's just as if Hemlock were sratching at the surface, ready to almost break through the ice (or glass ceiling, as the saying goes).
The cover art on the other hand is an element that holds this band down in my opinion. If you handle bands and albums as a package, where the image, sound, logo, album sleeve and artwork, songwriting and credibility are all integral parts of the whole, then this band needs to get the sleeve and logo part down to feel "big time". There are small things that turn out to be big things in the overall picture if you really break down what the buying customer feels drawn to when dealing with a somewhat unknown band on the sales shelf. The visual imagery is the first thing that either draws a person in or leaves them cold, having heard little or nothing of the group in question.
A little tweaking and a bit more of a brush-up on the band's members' images on an individual level (ala Americana as we know it) and why not - we might be seeing Hemlock become part of the big time at some point!
