Orange Goblin on näköjään hypännyt sivuun Lee Dorrianin Rise Above -lafkalta ja tähtää nyt korkeammalle Mayan Recordsin listoilta. Uunituoreen Goblin-lätyn nimi on siis Healing Through Fire, ja koska tässä on tullut missattua bändin pari edellistä tuotosta, voin verrata sitä vain varhaisempien OG-levyjen kanssa. Vuosia sitten Orange Goblin oli yksi stoner rock -liikkeen näkyvimpiä yhtyeitä edustaen genren brittilegioonia maailmanlaajuisesti. Sittemmin koko stoner rockin suosio on ollut alamäessä musiikkibisneksessä viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. OG:n kaltaiset yhtyeet kuitenkin jyräävät eteenpäin itsepintaisesti, ja myös tästä johtuen bändi on yli 10-vuotisella urallaan onnistunut luomaan itselleen varsin lujan fanikannan.
OG on onnistunut mielestäni aina luomaan hyviä riffejä ja mielekästä groovea - jopa tarttuvia hetkiä - mutta yleisesti ottaen bändi ei ole onnistunut kirjoittamaan varsinaisia iskusävelmiä. Onhan tässä popsittavaa kerrakseen, mutta mitään gourmet-makupaloja on turha odottaa. OG on omassa genressään samassa asemassa kuin LA Guns on Guns'N'Rosesiin verrattuna - työläisluokan tapaus. Erot löytyvät mm. sovitusten ja biisinkirjoituksen yleisestä tasosta. Yksi asia, joka myös estää OG:ta nousemasta ylemmälle oksalle, on vokalisti Ben Wardin tulkinnan köyhyys. Mies yksinkertaisesti kuulostaa liian vaikeaselkoiselta, jopa riitasointuiselta laulajalta. Hänen äänensä sointi ei yksinkertaisesti vakuuta, ja tämä heikkous pitäisi tuotannossa huomioida, niin kuin se on huomioitu vaikkapa Anthony Keidisin (RHCP), Rob Zombien tai Alice Cooperin tapauksissa. Jotenkin kummassa yksikään tuottaja ei ole vain jaksanut paneutua Ben Wardin rajoitteisiin tähän mennessä. Kenties vika on vain omissa korvissani, mutta mielestäni asiaan olisi pitänyt puuttua jo vuosia sitten. En yksinkertaisesti pääse sen tosiasian yli, että Ben Wardin ääni kuulostaa monotoniselta ja ohuelta etenkin koko albumin mitassa kuunneltuna.
Healing Through Firella on silti hetkensä, kuten armottomassa They Come Back (Harvest of Skulls) -kappaleessa, joka taitaa olla tämän levyn vetävin ralli. Jopa Ward yltyy varioimaan ääntään tässä kappaleessa örinällä ja kirkumista lähentevillä kurkkuäänillä. Muutoin levy on kauttaaltaan hyvin tasaista äänivyöryä, sellaista mitä olen tottunut Orange Goblinilta odottamaankin. Vyöryväliikkeiset, paksut stoner-riffit purkautuvat verrattain kaoottisen rytmiikan ja lyömäsoitinten päälle - lopputulos on tietenkin luonteeltaan jotain äänekästä ja epävirkamiesmäistä. Todelliset hitit ja kaupallisuuden edellyttämä dynamiikka vain puuttuvat. Tämä bändi toimii livenä satavarmasti, mutta levyltä kuunneltuna OG käy työlääksi väärällä tavalla.
Alas, it seems Orange Goblin have parted ways with Lee Dorrian's Rise Above label and moved to wider pastures with Mayan Records. Healing Through Fire is the name of the newest Goblin release, and having missed the past couple of Orange Goblin albums I have to say I only have early OG to draw comparisons with. Back in the day, Orange Goblin was at the forefront of the stoner rock movement, representing the British contingent of the genre worldwide. Granted, stoner rock has suffered a lapse in popularity over the course of the rapidly chaging tides within the music industry itself over the past few years. Still, bands like OG persist in doing their thing and forging on, possibly due to the fact that they have managed to establish a solid fanbase over the past 10 or so years.
The one thing that has always struck me about OG is the fact that they have plenty of good riffs and grooves, even a few memorable numbers, but overall this band is missing what I'd term a hit-minded aptitude. They offer up the meat and potatoes, which is filling enough, but you wouldn't put OG on the elite menu for the upper class. If we switch genres, it would be akin to comparing Guns'N'Roses to LA Guns. There is a difference, and it's in the arrangements and songwriting overall. The one thing that makes OG fall short of greater glory is partially found in the lack of depth in vocalist Ben Ward's interpretation. Big Ben simply comes off sounding too atonal and even dissonant. His voice doesn't "ring out" and a good producer can find ways to work around lack of range, as Anthony Keidis of RHCP, Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper are all living testaments to. Yet somehow, no producer has really ever gotten around to working around Ben Ward's limitations, which at this point in the band's career is simply befuddling. Maybe it's only in my ears, but I've felt Ward's vocal approach could have done with a good reworking years ago. I just can't over the fact that Ben Ward sounds like he has one frequency in his voice and that one frequency runs very thin over the course of an entire album.
Still, Healing Through Fire has its moments, such as the relentless heaviness of They Come Back (Harvest of Skulls), which may very well be the standout track of this release. Even Ward offers up more diversity vocally here, with growls and gutteral near-screams. Otherwise the bulk of Healing Through Fire is a steady course of what I've learned to expect from Orange Goblin. Rolling, thick walls of stoner riffage cascading over fairly chaotic percussion and rhythms, noisy as all hell and brutish in nature - that's Orange Goblin for you. The true hits are missing and the commercial dynamic is still lacking. I'm sure they are a blast live, but an album full of OG becomes an arduous listen in this guy's ears.
