Viides ja ilmeisesti viimeinen painos aiheesta Monsters of Metal on julkaisusarjan ajankohtaisin osa, eikä esittele edeltäjiensä tavoin niin runsaasti vanhaa materiaalia. Biiseistä suuren osan voisi niputtaa termin moderni extreme metal alle, joten kyseisestä tyylilajista pitäville tämä kokoelma voi olla vallan oiva ostos. Itselleni Vol. 5 on sarjan kehnommasta päästä, sillä en itse niinkään lämpene kokoelman yksipuolisuudelle aiempien julkaisujen iskevän monipuoliseen tarjontaan verrattuna.
Kai tämän kokoelman voi sitten tiivistää sanoin "toiset videot ovat toisia visuaalisesti miellyttävämpiä". Deathstarsin avausveto Cyanide, In Flamesin Take This Life sekä Children Of Bodomin Are You Dead Yet? erottuvat edukseen ykköslevyltä. Liian monet musiikkivideot turvautuvat yksinkertaisesti dokumentoimaan bändin hipelöimässä soittimiaan, eivätkä kymmenet kuvakulmat ja zoomit tee tuotoksista sen vähemmän kiusaantuneita tai mielikuvituksettomia. On erittäin piristävää nähdä videoita, kuten COB:in Are You Dead Yet?, joka muistuttaa enemmän minielokuvaa kuin soitannallisen kyvykkyyden esittelyä.
Kakkoslevy tarjoilee huippuhetkinä mm. Gotthardin Sin City -henkisen Anytime Anywheren, Nightwishin visuaalisesti häikäisevän Sleeping Sunin (2005), Edguyn koomisen Superheroesin, Mercyful Faten nostalgisen The Uninvited Guestin sekä Devin Townsendin tietoisesti camp-henkisen Vampirian. Henkilökohtaisesti kokoelman vakuuttavin metallielämys on kuitenkin Armoured Saintin Reign of Fire, jonka aito heavy metal -fiilis ja perseelle potkiva asenteikkuus nostavat kohokohdaksi. Myös Exodusin brutaali Now Thy Death Day Come tanssitypyineen on juovuttavaa metal-valssailua parhaimmillaan.
Kuten yllä tuli todettua, tämä julkaisu ei kuitenkaan pärjää vertailussa aiemmille MOM-kokoelmille. Se on joka tapauksessa mainiosti koottu ja jossain määrin myös monipuolinen paketti täynnä laadukkaita musiikkivideohetkiä.
The fifth and seemingly final installment of the Monsters of Metal series sees much more in the way of modern metal and current material, instead of older videos from years gone by. There's quite a lot in the way of modern extreme metal on this compilation, so if that is your bag then this is for you. Personally, Vol. 5 is one of my least favorites in the MOM series, simply due to the types of the choices hand-picked for this comp vs. earlier, more diverse volumes in the series.
Some of the videos here are more visually entertaining than others, such as opener Deathstars with their song Cyanide, In Flames with Take This Life and Children Of Bodom's Are You Dead Yet? standing out on disc one. All too many music videos simply feature visual documentation of band members playing their instruments, and a whole song full of this can be tedious and unimaginative, no matter how many camera angles and zooms you want to use. It's a breath of fresh air to see vids like COB's Are You Dead Yet? with an actual story to follow, making for a mini-movie, instead of just another display of musical aptitude.
Disc two ups the ante with hilites include Gotthard's Sin Cityish Anytime Anywhere, the alluring visuals behind Nightwish's Sleeping Sun (2005), the comical Superheroes by Edguy, the nostaligia of Mercyful Fate's The Uninvited Guest, the hilarious campiness of Devin Townsend's Vampira and a few other ditties. My favorite metal moments on this comp was most definately Armoured Saint's Reign of Fire, with it's true heavy metal vibe and kick ass attitude and Exodus' Now Thy Death Day Come with it's brutal campiness and hot chicks dancing away to music that isn't meant for anything more than Toxic Waltzing...
The cast of this volume, as I mentioned earlier, doesn't make for one of the top MOM episodes in my humble opinion. However, this is a finely packaged video compilation and it cannot ne slighted for offering a fair deal of diversity.
