The Space Age Playboys
Warrior Soul väittää musiikkinsa olleen punkkia, mutta minäpä olen hieman toista mieltä. Warrior Soul esitti hyökkäävän rankkaa sleaze rockia punkkiasenteella väritettynä. Oli miten oli, uudelleenjulkaisunkin välityksellä tämä levy potkii persiille varsin kovaa.
Biisit kuten The Drug, The Pretty Faces ja Rotten Soul sisältävät aimo annoksen aitoa rock'n'rollia. The Space Age Playboysin pirullista groovea, suoraviivaisuutta ja asenteellista laulutyöskentelyä ei yksinkertaisesti voi vastustaa. Toisaalta levyn rankkuus kääntyy pituutensa vuoksi itseään vastaan, sillä 13 rallia on liian paljon kerta-annokseksi. Etenkin loppua kohden biisit alkavat menettää mielenkiintoisuutensa.
Kaiken kaikkiaan levy on kuitenkin mainio ostos. Monella tämän päivän sleaze rock -ryhmällä olisi tästä vielä paljon opittavaa. Suositteluni!

Chill Pill
Siinä missä The Space Age Playboys on mitä loistavin albumi, ei Chill Pillistä voi ikävä kyllä sanoa samaa. Yhdenkään biisin ei voi sanoa olevan läpeensä hyvä, ja jo pelkästään siinä mielessä Chill Pill on Warrior Soulin uran heikko lenkki. Tällä levyllä bändi on menettänyt täysin suuntavaistonsa, ajautunut tuntemattomille vesille ja upottanut laivansa.
Chill Pill on kenties aavistuksen hämmentynyt sen julkaisemisen aikaan vallinneesta grunge-buumista, sillä biisit menettävät kokeilevuutensa vuoksi suurimman osan rokkaavuudestaan. Biisit eivät etene, ja kokonaisuus on vaikeaselkoinen. Bändi herättää toivon kipinän aina toisinaan hyvillä riffintapaisilla, mutta yhtä nopeasti heidän otteensa tästä riffistä kirpoaa. Jopa vokalisti Kory Clarke tuntuu olevan väärässä paikassa tällä levyllä, mikä ei yleisesti ottaen ole Warrior Soulin perisynti.
Suoraan sanottuna Chill Pilliä alemmas ei tämä bändi voi vajota.

The Space Age Playboys
Warrior Soul prided themselves on being punk back in the day but I wager to disagree. Warrior Soul was abrasive and hard sleaze rock with punk attitude. That said, many years later this re-issue is still fresh and kick-ass.
Songs like The Drug, The Pretty Faces and Rotten Soul all showcase a healthy dose of what rock'n'roll should sound like and characterize. Great grooves, straight-forward songwriting and attitude-filled vocals make for a strong ride with The Space Age Playboys. On the downside, 13 songs takes a turn for the redundant, as there is no way that the album's intensity can remain unhinged with that kind of duration. Especially towards the end The Space Age Playboys begins to wear thin on the proverbial goods.
Overall, production-wise and rated on the general strength of the numbers, this album is a very good buy. Definitely something that many sleaze rock bands today could learn something from. A strong thumbs up.

Chill Pill
Whereas The Space Age Playboys was a great album in it's genre Chill Pill was an absolute dud. With arguably no songs that are thoroughly any good, Chill Pill is the prodigal album of Warrior Soul's career. Having lost their way, the band obviously wandered out onto untested waters and ultimately their ship sank.
Perhaps flustered by the grunge boom, Chill Pill features songs that are so experimental and wavering that the rock factor is completely missing. The songs go nowhere and the overall vibe is very convoluted. The band might latch onto a good riff here or there but they lose it as soon as they find it and go in another direction. Vocalist Kory Clarke also sounds very out of place here which is not the case with Warrior Soul in general.
Chill Pill is the absolute bottom of the barrel for Warrior Soul. 'Nuff said.
