Lontoon kuuluisalla Brixton Academylla nauhoitettu Machine Head -live esittelee hienossa vireessä olevan yhtyeen. Oikeastaan opin kunnioittamaan bändiä aivan uudella tavalla katsottuani viimeisimmän studiolevyn nauhoituksissa tallennetun videoreportaasin. Siinä valossa Elegies näyttäytyy hivenen erilaisena ennakkoajatuksiin nähden.
Machine Head on todellakin rypenyt oman aikansa mutaisessa maaperässä, eikä vähiten viime vuosina koettujen kokoonpanomuutosten johdosta. Etenkin kitaristit ovat saaneet tulla ja mennä, ja samalla bändi on vain vaivoin saanut pidettyä otteen tulevaisuudestaan. On vaikea uskoa, että tämä bändi käännytettiin neljän biisin demoineen kylmästi pois lafkojen ovelta heidän etsiessään uutta sopimusta Supercharger-floppia seuranneen Roadrunner-eron jälkeen. Bändi harkitsi jopa nimensä vaihtamista, mikä olisi pelin tässä vaiheessa saattanut aiheuttaa suurehkoja ongelmia. Moisia lafkasotkuja ajatellessa tulee mieleen oman bändin vastaavat vaikeudet; tietenkin sillä erotuksella, että allekirjoittanut ja bändinsä ovat maailmanlaajuisessa tunnettuudessa muutaman portaan Machine Headia alempana. Niin käsittämätöntä kuin se onkin, Machine Headille ei uutta lafkaa meinannut siinä vaiheessa löytyä.
Tuoreimman täyspitkän hienolla Imperium-raidalla starttaava ja siitä armottoman Season's Witherin kautta eteenpäin jyräävä Elegies on upeaa kuultavaa ja myös visuaalisesti kohtuullisen viihdyttävää kauraa. Ainoa biisilistan kyseenalaistettava raita on Decend The Shades Of Night, joka ei kuulu bändin vahvimpiin vetoihin, jos ymmärrätte mitä tarkoitan. The Burning Red toimii ehkäpä kevyempänä välipalaraitana, vaikka kappaleena ei järin kummoinen olekaan. Rallit kuten Ten Ton Hammer tuuttaavat kuitenkin sen verran ruhjovasti, että DVD:n levittämä yleisfiilis on erittäin mainio, ja etenkin Burn My Eyesilta poimitut makupalat suorastaan sulavat suussa.
Bändi yhteensoitto ja ilme on niin tiukka kuin näin kokeneelta bändiltä voi odottaakin. En ole koskaan ollut erityinen Machine Head -fani, mutta bändillä on edelleen selkeästi tiukka ote omasta tyylistään. Yhtä kaikki, omassa metallinurkkauksessaan vakuttavaa tavaraa.
Recorded at London's famous Brixton Academy, this recording from December 2004 showcases Machine Head in fine tuned gear. It was only upon viewing the Making Of... section regarding their last album Through The Ashes Of Empires that a whole new respect toward the band opened up. In that light, one views this Elegies outing with a different perspective than one initially set out on.
Indeed, Machine Head has done their “time” down in the lower dregs, “down time” if you will. After a few line-up changes mostly in regards to the guitarist position being a somewhat revolving door over the past several years, Machine Head served some hard time in regards to maintaining a grip in the industry. It's difficult to believe that this band shopped around a 4-song demo to “nearly every label” and were turned away at every door after Roadrunner dropped them for a spell following the disappointing Supercharger album sales. Coming down to the reality of maybe changing the name of the band at this stage of the game presents a big dilemma. Just considering that no labels were interested sounds frighteningly similar to experiences of my own, only Machine Head is a ”few” leagues ahead of Yours Truly and his band of merry men in terms of recognition on a worldwide scale. Yet, the mere thought that no label would want Machine Head is baffling.
Opening with the superb Imperium from the band's last album, seguing into the ferocious Season's Wither and beyond, Elegies is a great listen and a fairly entertaining visual. The only track I question including in the set is Decend The Shades Of Night, which isn't exactly the strongest Machine Head medicine around, if you get my drift. The Burning Red is an alright in-between mellow track and thus serves its place in the set but as a song in itself it's nothing special. Yet tracks like Ten Ton Hammer deliver the goods with crushing force and the overall vibe of this DVD generates a definitive thumbs up, especially with the inclusion of must-have goodies from Burn My Eyes.
The band is as tight as you'd expect at this stage of the game after all these years and they most definitely have their game face on. I've never particularly been a Machine Head fan but they still managed to convince me that they have a solid grip on the market with their own metallic niche and in this day and age that's saying a lot.
