Tommyland ei biisiensä puolesta ole lähelläkään Motley Crueta, mikä ei toki ole yllättävää herra T-Bonen musiikkimaun tuntien. The Ride on rento albumi, jolla esiintyy vierailevia tähtiä Nickelbackin Chad Kroegerista, Something Corporaten Andrew McMahonista ja Fuelin Carl Bellistä lähtien ties mihin B-rapun poikiin a'la Backstreet Boys asti.
Levyn hittibiisi taitaa olla Tired, jonka sanoitukset kertovat tarinan ihmissuhteiden karikkoisesta luonteesta, mitä kuvataan myös kertosäkeen pätkässä “Tommy got tired of Pamela”. Niinpä, neljän viikon jälkeen. Se tuote oli nopeasti loppuun kulutettu. Tai enemmänkin moinen lyhytjänteisyys kertoo kenties ihmisen päänsisäisistä ongelmista. Monet levyn kappaleet käsittelevät joka tapauksessa (yllätys, yllätys) ihmissuhteita. Ei kovinkaan Metal, sanoisin. Toinen levyn huippuhetkistä on koukukkaan kertosäkeen ja tarttuvan melodian ympärille kietoutuva Makin' Me Crazy, jossa esiintyy naisvokalisti Dirty Harry.
The Ride ei taida sittenkään olla minun kuppini teetä, sillä omaan makuuni se on aivan liian rento ja rauhoittava. Levyä kuunnellessa täytyy muistuttaa itseään, että kyse on kuitenkin legendaarisen Motley Cruen dynaamisesta rumpalieläimestä. Levyllä ei ole tietoakaan asenteikkaasta, iskevästä tai hyökkäävästä meiningistä - eikä puntti muutenkaan värähtele vanhojen hyvien aikojen malliin. Kenties legendat sittenkin vanhenevat ja muuttuvat elämän virrassa muiden kuolevaisten tavoin. Anna anteeksi, T-Bone, mutta luulin sinussa olevan ainesta parempaan.
Tommyland is nothing remotely near to Motley Crue in terms of songwriting, which isn't suprising considering T-Bone's musical tastes. The Ride is a laid-back effort, with guest stars galore ranging from Chad Kroeger of Nickelback to Andrew McMahon of Something Corporate to Carl Bell of Fuel to somebody from the Backseat...er, Backstreet Boys and beyond.
The album hilite might very well be Tired which features a storylike narration in lyrical form of why relationships break up, featuring the telling chorus line of “Tommy got tired of Pamela”. What was that about after the first four weeks anyway? Man, that is a short fuse! Any relationship that you get tired of after four weeks just shows that somebody or something is majorly fucked up. Actually, many of the songs on Tommyland are (suprise!) about relationships. Not very Metal, mind you. Another very strong song for album hilite consideration is Makin' Me Crazy featuring female vocalist Dirty Harry with it's hooky chorus and catchy melody.
The Ride really isn't my cuppa as it is waaaaayyyyyyy too laid back and mellow for it's own good. It's honestly hard to believe that this is the dynamic drummer of the legendary Motley Crue. There is no attitude, no punch, no attack and no real good times vibes. Man, maybe the legends really all do grow old and change with the tides of life. Sorry T-Bone, you could've done better.
