Brittiläinen Mistress on parantanut ilmaisuaan dramaattisesti viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. Bändin viimeisin albumi In Disgust We Trust oli tasoltaan monta porrasta edeltäjäänsä The Chronovisoria parempi. The Chronovisor on puolestaan huimasti yhtyeen debyyttiä parempi, koska tältä levyltä ei yksinkertaisesti löydy muistiin jääviä biisejä, vaikka sludgeasennetta onkin jaettavaksi asti. Metallicalta lainattu Whiplash on selkeästi levyn parasta antia, mikä kielii myös bändin oman tarjoilun laadusta.
Mistress on toki kiinteää kuin käynyt hunaja, mutta tämän levyn perusteella bändi kuulostaa yhtä epätoivoiselta kuin perhosuinti tervahaudassa. Lätyn toinen lainakappale on Tom Waitsin Earth Died Screaming, joka toki erottuu muista biiseistä, joskaan ei mitenkään hyvällä tavalla. Tätä levyä ei kerta kaikkiaan huvittaisi kuunnella yhtä raitaa pidemmälle. Vaikka kuinka on kyse sludgesta, levy on silti tavattoman tasapaksu kuuntelukokemus. Jokaisella kappaleella tulisi olla oma funktionsa, mikä ei ilmiselvästi ole asian laita tällä Mistressin debyytillä.
U.K.'s Mistress has improved dramatically over the past few years. Their last album In Disgust We Trust was leagues better than its predecessor The Chronovisor. In that light The Chronovisor is better than this debut, as there is sludge to boot but very nil in the way of memorable songs here. A bonus cover of Metallica's Whiplash is arguably the best cut on the album and that translates into pretty weak offerings of their own.
Otherwise Mistress is thick as fermented honey and listening to this album makes one feel like they are desperately trying to swim in a tar pit. Another bonus cover of Tom Waits' Earth Died Screaming distinguishes itself from the flock and is pretty ugly listening to boot. I just can't get over the fact that the novelty of listening to over one cut of this slab wears thin mighty quick. There's way too much of the same and too little diversity even taking into consideration the sludge genre. Each song should offer something of its own and with this initial Mistress album it just doesn't tick.
