Ruotsin stoner rock -jätti Mustasch palaa viihdyttämään meitä neljännellä albumillaan Powerhouse, jonka parin vuoden takaisella edeltäjällä, RatSafarilla, bändi kokeili siipiään toisen tuottajan alaisuudessa. Powerhouse on onneksi sitä itseään, albumi täynnä mehevän paksuja riffejä ja mahtavaa tuotantoa. Tämän lisäksi mammuttisoundein on koristeltu tähän mennessä parhaat Mustasch-rallit!
Aina Haunted By Myselfin valtavan jyrästä avausriffistä, Sabbathmaiseen Frosty Whiteen ja tarttuvan melodramaattiseen Dogwashiin - saati nimiraitaan tai levyn ehdottomasti popahtavimpaan I'm Alright -biisiin, Powerhouse todistaa olevansa kaiken saamansa hehkutuksen arvoinen. Tästä keitoksesta ei mauttomia ainesosia löydy, eivätkä hitaammat ja tavallaan heikommat raidatkaan himmennä kokonaisuuden loistoa.
Siinä missä Mustaschin Above All -kakkoslevyn yleisilmeen vesitti sen monotoninen jälkipuolisko, Powerhouse tarjoilee täsmäiskuja järjestelmällisemmin, eikä lätylle täytekamaa täten mahdu. Hitaampikin raita levylle mahtuu, kunhan se on juuri niin laadukas kuin Life On Earth on. Itse asiassa tämä sävellys muistuttaakin hieman Dion aikaisesta Sabbathista, etenkin Children Of The Sea -biisistä. Mustasch-levylle tällaisia fiilistelyjä ei kuitenkaan määräänsä enempää mahtuisi.
Kaiken kaikkiaan suosittelisin tätä tiilimurikkaa kaikille, jotka ovat ikinä pitäneet massiivisen tanakasta macho rockista ja ylipainoisista riffeistä. Tyhmiä olette, jos ette tätä kaunokaista kotiinne kanna. Vaikka bändin vokalisti on kuin hiilikopio The Cultin Ian Astburystä, ei Powerhousen viehätys vähene silmissäni lainkaan. Kerrassaan erinomaista!
Sweden's Stoner Rock megalith Mustasch is back on track with their fourth album Powerhouse after venturing out with a different producer for RatSafari a couple of years back. Powerhouse is indeed just that, chock-full of fat riffs and great production values with a big, mammoth sound and the best set of Mustasch songs to date!
From the immense, chugging riff that opens this newbie with Haunted By Myself to the Sabbathy Frosty White to the catchy melodrama of Dogwash to the strong title track to the most commercially-accessible, albeit poppish and rocking album track I'm Alright, Powerhouse is a keeper. There is very little in the way of mid-level chunks in the stew, as the slower and perhaps somewhat weaker numbers are strategically placed as not to affect the flow of things.
Whereas too many nothing-to-say/nothing-to-give tracks littered the latter half of Mustasch's second album Above All (after a monsterous first half), watering down the overall feel of the record as things turned rather monotonous, Powerhouse offers smarter songwriting and less filler in contrast. A slow song like Life On Earth can pass if it's written and done well, almost reminiscent of Dio-era Sabbath like Children Of The Sea, but too many of those aren't good for the long haul either.
All in all I'd say anyone who likes big, fat, macho rock with heavyweight riffs and upper echelon vibes should check this slabbage out. Heck, you'd be a frickin' fool to not give this outing the time of day! Even if the band's vocalist sounds like a stunt double for Ian Astbury from The Cult, you can't go wrong with Powerhouse. Excellent stuff!
