Peter Pan Speedrock. Herran jestas mikä nimi! Alankomaiden Eindhovenista pyllistävä yhtye esittelee meille boogie rockia, josta ei vauhtia puutu. Suurin osa Spread Eaglen biiseistä ovat audiomuotoon puserrettuja amfetamiinitabletteja, jotka arvatenkin tekevät oikeutta orkesterin nimelle, ainakin osittain. Peter Panista voisi saada mielleyhtymiä ties mihin hienohelmaiseen taikamaailmataivallukseen hatusta pomppivine kaneineen, mutta onneksi levy ei tarjoilekaan happoilua Disneylandissa. Levyn tarjoilemat fiilikset eivät siis tavallaan tue Peter Pan -nimen valintaa.
Kappaleet kuten Cock-Teaser, Alpha Female ja Red Wings (Helvetin Enkeleiden lanseeraama termi naiseen kohdistuvalle suuseksille sinä eräänä aikana kuukaudessa) antavat olettaa, ettei bändi ole täysin tosissaan hommaa tekemässä. Ennemminkin on kyse ilmassa lentelevien hauskanpidon hiutaleiden poimimisesta, yhtä kaikki naurulta ei voi välttyä. Soundit ovat mukavan tanakat ja musiikillisesti nämä äijät rokkaavat lennokkaasti. Kautta linjan yllä pidetty nopea tempo kääntyy lopulta ehkä hieman monotonisuuden puolelle. Eiväthän karhutkaan riehu koko ajan, ne syö välillä puolukoita; tiedätte kyllä mitä tarkoitan.
En muista törmänneeni tähän bändiin ennen tätä päivää, mutta katsaus kotisivuille kertoo Mikämikämaan häiskien levytyshistorian olevan jokseenkin samankaltainen kotimaisen The Flaming Sideburnsin kanssa. Kasapäin indie-sinkkuja, splittejä ja kokoelmalevyesiintymisiä takataskussaan kantavalle yhtyeelle Spread Eagle on viides täyspitkä levytys. Jos siis pidät garage- ja boogie-mallin rockista, psychobillystä ja yleensäkin hyvin esitetystä indie-linjan rock'n'rollista, tämä levy voi hyvinkin puhutella sinua. Meikäläisellekin positiivinen yllätys siihen nähden, että ennen promon tipahtamista käsiini en ollut kuullut edes bändin nimeä.
Peter Pan Speedrock. Man, what a name! From Eindhoven in The Netherlands, this trio pulls off some mean boogie rock with lots of...you guessed it, speed. Most of the songs on Spread Eagle are sonic amphetamine pills, doing justice to the name for sure. Peter Pan would bring images of some fancy pants magic bullshit, like someone quirps "presto" and the rabbit pops out of the hat and we're all spaced out in Disneyland like it's a bad acid trip. Well I don't get that vibe and tht said I don't get the Peter Pan part of the equasion.
With songs like Cock-Teaser, Alpha Female and Red Wings (a Hell's Angels term for cunnilingus when the girl is on the rag) you know PPS aren't all that serious with their message. This is more of a good times roll with a flakey clutch and shen you crash all you can do is laugh. The sound is rather thick and chunky and musically these guys rock out. Maybe overall the fast tempo of much of the material becomes monotonous, much like too many good times without any bad times as a point of reflection and comparison begin to taste bland and ordinary.
I don't recall coming across this band before but upon prying at their website I noticed these guys have been around with a recording history much like The Flaming Sideburns. With lots of indie singles, split albums and compilation album apprearances behind them Spread Eagle marks what looks like the band's fifth full-length outing. If you like garage rock, boogie rock, psychobilly, and well performed indie rock'n'roll then this might be your cuppa. A positive suprise as I had no clue what to expect when this promo landed in my hands.
