Joskus täytyy vain ihmetellä, miksi tietyt lafkat lähettävät Imperiumin kaltaiselle, pääasiassa raskaaseen musiikkiin keskittyvälle medialle materiaalia, joka ei ole raskaudesta kuullutkaan. Antler on yksi tällainen tapaus. Bändiä voisi sen sijaan kuvailla synkähköksi ja vaihtoehtoiseksi southern rockiksi, paikoin jopa rauhalliseksi sellaiseksi. Antler onkin lähempänä The Doorsin ja Willie Nelsonin yhteenliittymää kuin vaikkapa Hanoi Rocksia, joten ymmärtänette, mitä tarkoitan.
Tyylin tarkempi analysointi osoittautuu hankalaksi tehtäväksi, mutta jostain The Doorsin, The Quireboysin, southern rockin ja countryn suunnalta bändi ponnistaa. Antler on erittäin pehmeäsävyistä tavaraa. Tämä levy ei valmista sinua henkisesti lauantai-iltaisia tappeluja varten. Kaikesta huolimatta esimerkiksi My Life ja I Laid Eyes ovat hyviä kappaleita. Jos levyn rauhoittavan tunnelman onnistuu sisäistämään, osaa albumia arvostaa juuri sellaisena kuin se on. Levy muistuttaakin jonkin verran Black Label Societyn sävykästä Hangover Musicia.
Antleria onkin hankala arvostella, sillä levy tuskin kuuluu keskiarvoisen Imperiumin lukijan kuuntelemistoon. Jos lätyn puolestaan arvioi puhtaasti sen sisältämän materiaalin ja yleistunnelman pohjalta, on albumi ihan miellyttävää kuunneltavaa.
There are times when I question why certain labels send specific material to Imperiumi, which is a metal and heavy music media, for review when that material seems too distant for consideration. Antler is one such case. This band could be considered morose, alternative Southern Rock with a laid back touch. Actually Antler has more in common with The Doors meets Willie Nelson than per se Hanoi Rocks, so you get my point.
Drawing a comparison for easier digestion proves to be an arduous task, but I'd say these guys are like The Doors meets The Quireboys meets Southern Rock meets Country. Antler is very mellow stuff. This isn't ear candy to get you juiced up for a saturday night fight. That said songs like My Life and I Laid Eyes are still good tunes. If you can get into the laid back atmosphere of this album you'll be able to appreciate it for what it is. Kind of like BLS's super mellow Hangover Music album, if you catch my drift.
Antler is a hard call overall since like I said: It's highly debateable whether this album falls into Imperiumi territory. Nonetheless by simply grading this album on the strength of its songwriting and overall feel I'd say it's alright.
