Ruotsin Arise on julkaisemassa uutta, sarkastisesti nimettyä albumiaan The Beautiful New World, joka ensimmäisen kuuntelukerran myötä toi minulle mielleyhtymiä Carcassista. Syynä saattoi olla päätösraita Tribute To The Flesh, jossa vokaalit kuulostavat vuoroin In Flamesin Anders Fridéniltä, vuoroin Carcassin Jeff Walkerilta riippuen laulun puhtausasteesta.
Hemmot taitavat todellakin hommansa, vaikka eivät vielä aivan Heartworkin tasoista klassikkoa olekaan julkaisemassa. Arise on kuitenkin kelpo tulokas siihen death/thrashin uuteen aaltoon, joka Skandinaviasta on tänä päivänä nousemassa. Bändi tarvitsisi vielä pientä maustamista, jotta sen piilevän potentiaalin voisi valjastaa käyttöön, sillä olen aavistavinani, että hemmot tulevat tästä vielä parantamaan vauhtiaan. Oli kyseessä sitten tömisevän riffittelevä Dreams Worthy Gods, perseelle potkiva King Of Yesterday, Slave Of Today tai Carcassmainen Tribute To The Flesh on selvää, että nämä nuorukaiset osaavat biisejä tehdä. Ainoa miinuspuoli levyssä on tarttumapinnan ja dynamiikan puute, sillä tällaisenaan lätty soi aavistuksen homogeenisesti. Sovitusten ja kappalerakenteiden vaihtelevuutta voisi myös lisätä.
Kaiken kaikkiaan käsissä on tiukka paketti, joskin sen jättämää jälkimakua voisi vertailla paikallisen lounasravintolan tuottamaan: kaikki listan ruokalajit kun tuntuvat aina maistuvan samalta - aivan kuin keittiömestarin maustehyllystä löytyisi vain suola, pippuri sekä grillimauste. Enkä minä pidä grillimausteella höystetystä kalafileestä.
Sweden's Arise have a new album out sarcastically called The Beautiful New World and the first thing that came to my mind with a spin of this disc was Carcass. Perhaps it was the last track Tribute To The Flesh that had me thinking of the classic Brit oufit, especially with vocalist Erik Ljungqvist bringing to mind both Jeff Walker and Anders Fridén of In Flames, depending on the cleaner or less-cleaner parts.
These guys are good at what they do, no doubt about it, but that said they aren't quite up there with albums like Heartwork by the big guns yet. For all the neo-Death Thrash coming out of Scandinavia these days Arise is a competent player nonetheless. Perhaps a little more seasoning could really bring the potential of this outfit to the fore, as I sense there's still a little more to be "had" from these guys. Whether it's stomping dark monster riffage of the excellent Dreams Worthy Gods or the kick'n'roll of King Of Yesterday, Slave Of Today or the very Carcassy Tribute To The Flesh it can be said that Arise can pull off excellent tunage for their relatively young age. The one thing I was left wanting and waiting for was more in the way of textures and valleys in the overall sound that would have broken up the otherwise rather homogenous overall feel. More diversity in arrangements and song structures wouldn't have hurt either.
Overall a solid package, yet I'd equate it to a menu at the local diner where every option on the board tastes oddly the same, as if all the chef used was salt, pepper and grill sauce regardless of the dish. And I don't like grill sauce with my fillet'o'fish.
