Maltan saarelta tulee modernia doomia jostakin Candlemassin, Veni Dominen ja Kruxin välimailta. Puhtaat vokaalit, taidolla kudotut rakenteet ja kolossaalinen soundi tekevät Forsakenista kohtuullisen mukavaa kuultavaa.
Sanottakoon nyt, että kappaleet saattavat olla ehkä hieman liiankin monimuotoisia, sillä niistä ei erotu yhtäkään selkeästi "hitiksi" tai muutenkaan luokkaa muita paremmaksi veisuksi. Pieni osa puhtaista lauluista kuulostaa epävarmoilta, mutta kokonaisuutena vokalisti Leo Stivan ulosanti on hyvin äännettyä ja selkeää englantia (jota ei monista eurooppalaisista metallibändeistä pääse sanomaan).
Joissain veisuissa, kuten Sephirothissa on osia, jotka ovat ihan oma trippinsä erikoisine tekstuureineen ja mielialavaihteluineen. Toisten kanssa taas tylsistyy tuskastumiseen asti, kuten The Eyes Of Prometheusin kertosäkeessä. On kehaistava, että lyriikat ovat runollisia ja huomattavan hyvin kirjoitettuja, täysin verrannollisia esim. Lee Dorrianin parhaisiin säkeisiin. Ehkä jopa parempia.
Jos doom on sinun kahvikupposesi, otapa näiden hemmojen kiekko kuullaksesi. Ei tämä nyt ihan mahtavaa ole, mutta parempaa kuin nykyinen keskiverto doom metal. Kappaleiden sovitukseen ja karsimiseen olisi voitu kiinnittää enemmän huomiota, samoin kuin hyviin kertosäkeisiin keskittymiseen, nyt koko levyä hallitseva melankolia aiheutti tälle levylle arvosanaksi vain seiskan.
From the Isle of Malta comes some modern doom somewhere between Candlemass, Veni Domine and Krux. Clean vocals, intricatly woven structures and a colossal sound make for a pretty decent listen with Forsaken.
I have to say that perhaps the songs were a bit too multi-faceted for their own good, since nothing stands out of the mass as a breakaway hit or great overall song over the rest. Small portions of the clean vocals waver a tad on the weaker side but overall vocalist Leo Stiva's output is very well enunciated and rather clean english (the same cannot be said for many European metal bands).
There are parts of songs such as in Sephiroth that are a trip in themselves, with extravagant textures and moods galore. Some parts like the chorus to The Eyes Of Prometheus are painfully dull however. On the flipside the lyrics are well written and highly poetic and exotic, right up there with the best of Lee Dorrian and maybe even beyond.
If doom is your cuppa java then give these guys a whirl. Better than your average doom metal of the day, but not great. They could have put some more emphasis on arranging the songs and stripping them down, separating and focusing on good choruses instead of a plethora of melancholy that landed them this grade.
