Iron Saviorin kanssa tietää aina mitä saa. Kuten useimpien saksalaisten power-ryhmien kanssa asia on, ei Piet Sielckin Battering Ramkaan kovin kauas tutuista vesiltä ui. Kun otetaan huomioon kuinka paljon ja leveältä rintamalta power metallia maailmalta tulvii, on huomattava, että Iron Savior on onnistunut luomaan itselleen menestyksellisen muotin, jonka puitteissa tosin on melko haastavaa luoda mitään tuoreen kuuloista. Niinpä yhtyeen musiikista onkin helppo tehdä kiista aiheesta ovatko sen sävellykset laadukkaita, vai sitovatko power metallin luonnonlait yhtyeen liikaa kaavoihinsa.
Kuinka Battering Ramin kappaleet sitten vertautuvat takavuosien Iron Savior -biisistöön? No, tällä kertaa musiikista tuoksastaa aikaisempaa enemmän Judas Priest. Varsinkin kappaleessa Wings of Deliverancesta tulee Desert Plains -viboja. Stand Against The King on vankka kappale, eritoten sen pre-chorus, jossa on aivan fantastinen melodinen koukku. Riding Free on perin epätyypillinen, nopea Iron Savior -ralli, joka ei tarjoa kerrassaan mitään uutta ("Riding the wind like an eagle in the skies", kuinka pirun kliseeksi ja valjuksi voi tulla?). Starchaser on melkoisen liukuhihnaa, mutta onnistuu jotenkin kuulostamaan omituisesti tuoreelta ja se osoittautuukin levyn parhaimmistoon kuuluvaksi. H.M. Powered Man on machosta nimestään huolimatta levyn lässähtänein kappale, mutta siitä suurimmat syytökset voidaan lukea sen kertosäkeelle.
Kaiken kaikkiaan hyvä albumi, perustarpeet toimitetaan hyvin krjoitettuna ja esitettynä. Levyllä ei ole mitään mainittavia heikkouksia ja Iron Savior onnistuu kuulostamaan virkeämmältä kuin virkaveljistä vaikkapa Primal Fear, ja sehän on kehu se.
With Iron Savior you always know what you’re going to get. Much like the bulk of German power metal units Piet Sielck’s Battering Ram deosn’t
stray far from familiar waters, so to speak. Considering the breadth and width of the power metal genre Iron Savior manages to pull off a
successful formula, only that formula tends to become challenging to offer anything fresh in. So it becomes a case of arguing about the quality of the songwriting vs. the laws of nature binding the band to its style.
How do the songs on Battering Ram measure up to Iron Savior tunage from years past? I smell a bit more Judas Priest this time around. Especially
in Wings of Deliverance I get a Desert Plains vibe. Stand Against The King is a strong cut, particularly the pre-chorus, which has a fantastic melodic vocal hook. Riding Free is a very atypical, fast Iron Savior tune that offers nothing new (”Riding the wind like an eagle in the skies”, how cliché and bland can you get?). Starchaser is fairly by the numbers but still manages to sound fresh in a strange way and stands out as one of the better tracks on the album. H.M. Powered Man is probably the flattest track on the album despite its macho title, but that can be attributed to the chorus more than anything.
All in all a good album, the basic goods that are very well performed and well written. There’s nothing inherently poor on this album and Iron
Savior manages to come off sounding more fresh than contemporaries like Primal Fear and that can be held to their credit.
