Minusta Nuclear Blastin idea julkaista videokokoelmia, ei ainoastaan heidän omasta tuotannostaan vaan myös lisensoidusta musiikista, on hieno palvelus metallifaneille. Edellinen Monsters Of Metal DVD esitteli joitain graafisesti hienoja videoita hyvin erilaisilta bändeiltä kuten Strapping Young Lad, Cathedral, Kreator ja Masterplan. Monien Vol.1:llä olleiden bändien videoita löytyy myös Vol.2:lta, mikä ei minusta ole paras mahdollinen idea, koska bändivalikoimaa olisi nyt ollut hyvä laajentaa.
Tällä kertaa meille tarjoillaan sekä hyvää että ei-niin-hyvää (lue: ei niin metallista) visuaalista mätkettä. Muutama ajatus ykköslevystä: Dimmu Borgirin Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse on suorastaan kolossaalisen mahtava video, Primal Fearin sanallisesti kornissa Metal Is Foreverissa on mukava underground-tunnelma, Mnemicin Liquid on värikäs ja piristävän erilainen ja vanha Entombed Wolverine Bluesin muodossa tihkuu silkkaa nostalgiaa. Thunderstonen Until We Touch the Burning Sunin videossa ei ole mitään tarinallista ideaa, mutta pätkä onnistuu silti olemaan dramaattinen, Tiamatin Cain on tunnelmallinen ja Raunchyn Watch Out on ehkä ykköslevyn paras klippi, omassa eikoisuudessaan.
Toisella levyllä nähdään mm. yllättävän hyvä uusi Crematory-veisu Greed, Soilworkin bänditön animaatiovideo Light the Torch ja Savatagen mahtavan 80-lukulainen Gutter Ballet, jossa on lähes leffamainen atmosfääri. Helloweenin If I Could Fly on karismaattinen ja Arch Enemyn We Will Rise on kakkoslevyn lempiveisuni taifuunimaisessa valtavuudessaan. Stratovariuksen I Walk To My Own Song on miellyttävän värikäs ja Hypocrisyn Roswell 47 lähinnä kaoottinen.
DVD:n koko antia ei tietenkään voi kehua, moelmmille levyille on mahdutettu myös sekä valjua että liukuhihnatavaraa. Rhapsodyn Rain Of A Thousand Flames on hirveätä katsottavaa tahattomassa koomisuudessaan, joka vaivaa kaikkia Rhapsodyn videoita. Therionin To Mega Therionin video on perseestä, olkoonkin loistavasta biisistä tehty. Samat sanat voi sanoa Iced Earthin The Reckoningista, johon on tehty turruttavan tylsä video, vaikka itse biisi potkiikin munat sisään. Samaelin Infra Galaxia trippailee ei-minnekään ja Meshuggahin Transfixion on yksinkertaisesti kyllästyttävä. Saxonin Killing Ground on kuin live-esitys hidastuskuvalla, vaikka ei olekaan puoliksikaan niin huono kuin useimmat muut. Farmer Boysin ei pitäisi olla tällaisella kokoelmalla lainkaan melkein-teknollaan Stay Like this Forever ja Gravewormin Awaiting The Shiningkin on aika pöhkö.
Saahan tästä toki rahalleen vastinetta, mutta ei se yhtä hyvä ole kuin edeltäjänsä, Vol. 1, vaikka lähelle pääseekin.
I think Nuclear Blast’s idea to put out a set of promo video compilations of not only their own stock but licenced material also is a great treat to metal fans. The previous Monsters Of Metal DVD featured some graphic hotties as diverse as Strapping Young Lad, Cathedral, Kreator and Masterplan. Many of the same bands that were on Vol.1 are also featured in different videos on Vol.2 which wasn’t the best idea in my opinion, whereas they could have given space to a larger variety of bands.
This time around we’re treated to some good and some not so good (read: not so metal) visual battery. A few thoughts on Disc 1: Dimmu Borgir’s Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse is downright colossal, Primal Fear’s lyrically corny Metal Is Forever has a nice underground feel, Mnemic’s Liquid is colorful and different, old Entombed in the form of Wolverine Blues is nostalgic, Thunderstone’s Until We Touch the Burning Sun doesn’t really represent any semblance of an idea as far as storyline goes but the video is fairly dramatic nonetheless, Tiamat’s Cain is moody and Raunchy’s Watch Out is the hilite here (just for breaking the mold).
Disc 2 features video standouts like Crematory’s Greed which is suprisingly good, Soilwork’s Light the Torch for offering us a band-free storyline and animation, Savatage’s Gutter ballet with it’s 80’s superfeel and almost movie-like atmosphere, Helloween’s charismatic If I Could Fly, Arch Enemy’s We Will Rise is enormous in typhoon-like proportions (definitely one of the best here), Stratovarius’ I Walk To My Own Song is colorful and Hypocrisy’s Roswell 47 is chaotic.
Not everything is so great, rather bland and run of the mill videos litter both discs. Rhapsody’s Rain Of A Thousand Flames is a cellar grade unintentional comedy much like most of Rhapsody’s terrible videos, Therion’s To Mega Therion is a piss-poor video no matter how good the song, ditto for Iced Earth’s the Reckoning which is just terribly dull although the song rocks, Samael’s Infra Galaxia is like a trip that’s going nowhere, Meshuggah’s Transfixion is just plain boring with a capital B, Saxon’s Killing Ground is like a live band in slow motion but it’s not nearly as bad as most others, Farmer Boys have no business on this compilation with the near-techno Stay Like this Forever, and Graveworm’s Awaiting The Shining is kind of silly.
All in all a solid buy for your dollar. Not as good as Vol. 1 but close.
