Nyt kun olen seurannut Mannhain kehitystä muutaman vuoden ajan, on todettava, että jos jotain, niin Mannhai on pehmentynyt. Bändin tuorein pitkäsoitto The Exploder ei juuri rokkaavalla hittimateriaalilla pääse elvistelemään. Ei se huonokaan levy ole, kovin erilainen vain, ja ERITTÄIN retro (mikä sinällään on tavallaan hyväkin asia). Ongelmaksi muodostuukin se, että yhtye on uhrannut prosessissa ison osan raskaudestaan ja se ei ole hyvä se.
Tavallaan Mannhai on vuonna 2004 päätynyt kuulostamaan melkoisesti garage rockilta. Rock To The Top ei ole kummoinen lohkaisu albumin ensimmäiseksi singleksi, täyspitkän avausralli Mr. Out Of Sight olisi toiminut tähän rakoon paljon paremmin. Rock To The Top on tuikitavallinen veto "tämähän on kuultu jo miljoonasti" -melodioineen. Omiin korviini biisi kuulostaa tylsältä, eikä sen rakenteessakaan ihmeemmin mainittavaa ole. Biisin grooven lienee tarkoitus pistää takalisto tutisemaan, ja onhan sitä groovea, mutta se vain on... tuskallisen tavanomaista.
Singlen ja uuden levyn soundi on erittäin riisuttu, eikä siinä ole enää samaa ruhjovaa syvyyttä kuin ennen. Kuten jo todettua, se on erittäin garage rock-tyylinen. Sinkun muut biisit ovat keskivertokauraa; Slave To The Flamen paras hetki osuu sen tarttuvaan ja sielukkaaseen kitarasooloon, mutta Mötley Crüe -coveri Live Wire ei ole onnistumista lähelläkään. Elinikäisenä Crüe -fanina voin sanoa, että Mötiköiden coverointi on riskaabelia puuhaa ja alkuperäisen tasolle pääsemiseen tarvitaan aivan erityistä dynamiikkaa. Fozzy onnistui kohtuullisesti omassa coverissaan ko. biisin energian säilyttäen, mutta valitettavasti Mannhain versio kuulostaa sedatiivien vaikutuksen alaisena soperrellulta, eikä Joanitorin laulutapakaan sovi tämäntyylisen biisin versiointiin lainkaan.
Sorry kundit, minun korviini kakkosalbuminne vain on moninkertaisesti tätä parempi.
Having followed Mannhai's progression over the last few years, I must say that if anything, on their third outing they've gone a lot mellower. Their newest LP offering The Exploder features very little in the way of rocking hit material. That said, it's not a bad album by any stretch, just very different and VERY retro (which is a good thing in some aspects). The problem is that they've sacrificed a lot of heaviness in the process, and that's not a good thing.
In a way, Mannhai ends up sounding very garageish in 2004. Rock To The Top is not a strong number as a single song. The new LP opener Mr. Out Of Sight would have served much better in this capacity. Rock To The Top is very paint-by-numbers, with a "heard this a million times" melody. It just ends up sounding very dull in my ears, and there's not a lot to it structure-wise. The groove is seemingly meant to get your ass shaking, and it is grooveable at that. It's just painfully...plain.
The sound is very stripped down on the new album and material at hand. No more chunky depth. Like I said, very garagey. The accompanying tunes are pretty middle of the road, Slave To The Flame's hilite being a moody and catchy guitar solo, but Motley Crue cover Live Wire falls short of the mark. As a lifelong Crue fan, covering Motley is a very risky business and it requires a special dynamic to live up to the original. Fozzy covered this song fairly well and maintained the energy of the said original, but I'm sorry to say that Mannhai's adaption comes off sounding like it's been hammered with sedatives in a sludgely mix, and Joanitor's vocal style doesn't really fit in covering a song like this.
Sorry fellas, but in my ears your second album was many times better than this.
