Tällä DVD:llä on rutosti hyvää tavaraa, ja päälle muutama hassu pikkujuttu. Priestin kaikki musavideot löytyvät levyltä, ja sanottakoon nyt, että liian moni niistä on tehty samalla kaavalla: hei, kuvataan bändiä soittamssa jonkinlaisen taustakankaan edessä... siitä tulee siistiä! No, sen voi tehdä vain niin monesti, ennen kuin formaatti alkaa ryydyttää. Ozzyhan on tehnyt juuri samaa, katso vain vaikka monessako Ozzy-videossa kuvataan vain lähinnä John-pojan turpavärkkiä, jotta näkisimme Ozzmanin laulavan. Kysyn vaan miksi, hemmetti - MIKSI?
Rehellisesti sanoen, olisin pärjännyt Halfordia saunassa ja bändiä suihkussa "Hot Rockin’:in" promovideossa ikinä näkemättäkin... Ok, jos nyt ei lähdetä tuohon aiheeseen ollenkaan, joten mitäpä DVD:n muut videot tarjoavat? "Johnny B. Goode" ja "Painkiller" ovat saman oloisia niin visuaalisesti, fiilikseltä kuin konseptiltaankin, ja molemmat biisit ja video toimivat kuin häkä. "Don’t Go" on omituinen valinta videoksi, sillä biisi ei ole lähelläkään Priestin parhaimmistoa. Sitä paitsi jotain omituista siinäkin on, kun Halford anelee “Don’t Go” bändikavereilleen, kun he marssivat ovesta tyttölauman sekaan...
BBC:n äänitykset ovat vähintäänkin nostalgista tavaraa. Jotkut niistä tuntuvat vahvasti playback-esityksiltä, sillä biisit on vedetty uskomattoman puhtaasti. Saatan olla toki väärässäkin, mutta ihmettelenpä silti. Priestin olomuodossa on tapahtunut hurja muutos vuoden 1975 ja Rocka Rollan ledzeppelinmäisestä habituksesta ja Halfordin PITKISTÄ hiuksista myöhäisen 80-luvun niitti- ja nahkareleisiin.
DVD:n helmi on kuitenkin Dallasin keikka vuoden 1986 Turbo-levyn jälkeiseltä kiertueelta. Siinäkin tosin täytyy ihmetellä kuinka harvoin Ian Hill tai Dave Holland ovat osuneet kameran etsimeen. On kuin äijät olisivat statisteja Tiptonin, Downingin ja Halfordin ollessa ainoita, joilla on bändissä merkitystä. Ei ole liioiteltua sanoa, että 90% kamera-ajoista kuvaa joko vokalistia tai kitaristia ja voisinkin kuvitella osan porukasta tuntevan itsensä hieman huomiotta jääneeksi. Liekö sillekään nyt sen syvempää merkitystä, kunhan nyt ihmettelen.
Joka tapauksessa Dallasin show on kokonaisuudessaa LOISTAVA. On vaikea sanoa onko biisit esitetty keikalla samassa järjestyksessä kuin DVD:llä, koska videoesitystä on selkeästi editoitu raskaalla kädellä. Oli miten oli, "Out In The Cold:illa" eri pitäisi keikkaa aloittaa ikinä. Halford on livenä älyttömän hyvä. Olkoonkin mikä rööriroope hyvänsä, miehen laulamista ei voi moittia yhtään ja bändi on tiukka kuin ilmalukko. On aika inhottavaa miettiä, että jotain näin vanhaa (onhan tämä vuodelta 1986) olisi jälkiäänitelty, mutta onhan kaikki mahdollista. Joka tapauksessa ja epäilyksistäni huolimatta keikka on ihan mahtavaa katsottavaa. Nostalgiaa tai ei.
Lot of good stuff on this DVD with a dose of silly little ditties in the mix. All of Priest’s music videos are here and may it be said that too many of them follow the same formula: Hey, let’s film the band playing in fromt of some backdrop…I bet that’ll be a visual kick in the ass! Er, you can only get away with that so many times before it becomes redundant. Ozzy has done the same thing. Look at how many Ozzy vids have our boy John’s mug stretching wide open in syllables so we can watch the Ozzman sing. Why I ask…by George, WHY?
I honestly could’ve passed on Halford in the sauna and the boys in the shower in the Hot Rockin’ promo video. For the metal faithful maybe we shouldn’t go there, so how about the rest of the vids here? Johnny B. Goode and Painkiller follow the same feel and formula visually and conceptually, and both songs and vids work well. Don’t Go as a music video is a strange choice because as a song it’s definitely not up there with the greats. Besides, there’s just something odd about Halford pleading “Don’t Go” to his band members as they exit the door to find themselves amidst a group of chicks.
The BBC recordings from British TV are nostalgic to say the least. Somehow you get the feeling that these songs might be playback recordings, as they are clean as all hell. Maybe I’m wrong, who knows, but it stands to wonder. Quite the difference in image from the 1975 era with Rocka Rolla seeing Priest look rather Zeppelenish and even Halford has LONG hair, in contrast to the latter 1980´s look with the leather et al.
The true hilite of this disc is however the Dallas concert from Priest’s 1986 Turbo tour. Odd however is the scarcity of camera shots that either Ian Hill or Dave Holland get during the whole show. It’s almost as if these guys are the extras and Tipton, Downing and Halford are the only ones that count. It would be fair to say that 90% of the camera angles are either of the vocalist or guitarists and that might very well make some people feel left out. Hmm, any hidden messages here?
Be it said however that the Dallas show is STELLAR all the way. It’s hard to say whether the tracklist was played live as it is in the DVD running order since there is a fair bit of editing in the video presentation, and that said Out In The Cold is NOT a good opener. Halford is amazing live and all quirks aside, it’s hard to find anything to critique in his performance and the band is tight as an airlock. I would hate to think that something this old (hey, it is 1986 after all) would be overdubbed but everything is possible. Nonetheless, suspension of disbelief in tow and all in all this is great stuff. Nostalgia in check.
