Ozzyn Diary on selvästi edeltäjäänsä, Blizzard of Ozzia, synkempi levytys. Pidempine biiseineen Diary of a Madman tuntuukin ennemmin opukselta kuin albumilta. Levyllä on paljon tunnelmallista vetoja ja pahaenteistä tunnelmaa. Kenties biisit tuntuvatkin pidemmiltä kuin ne oikeasti ovat.

Kuten tiedämme, Over The Mountain ja Flying High Again sisältävät hyvää meininkiä ja muistettavaa riffittelyä. You Can't Kill Rock and Roll on puolestaan liian pitkä biisi, joka vain jatkaa runnomista, vaikka kaikki on jo tullut sanotuksi. Believer tuntuu puolestaan epäonnistuneelta ja tylsältä. Little Dolls on voodoo-juttuineen musiikillisesti mielenkiintoinen pala, josta löytyy niin tanakkaa riffiä kuin melankolisuudestaankin huolimatta hyvään nosteeseen kohoavaa kertosäettä. Tonight on tehokas voimaballadi. S.A.T.O.:n koko nimeä en koskaan ole saanut tietää, mutta biisi on silti yksi suosikeistani levyn yhtenä nopeimmista raidoista. Nimibiisi on puolestaan tylsä, yksinäinen, toivoton ja sairas, varmasti juuri sitä mitä John Osbourne on sen halunnutkin olevan.

Omassa rankingissani Diary jää piirun verran Blizzardin alapuolelle, joten arvosana on isketty sen mukaiseksi.

Ozzy's Diary album was definitely darker in slant than its predecessor Blizzard of Ozz. With longer songs to boot, Diary of a Madman is more of an opus than an album. Lots of moody sweeps and ominous vibes. Perhaps the songs themselves actually feel longer than they in truth are.

Good tunage and memorable riffs on Over The Mountain and Flying High Again, as we all know. You Can't Kill Rock and Roll is a tad too long for its own good, all has been said and it still keeps pumping away. Believer feels ill-fated and dire. Little Dolls with all its voodoo splendor is a rather intriguing cut musically with its stomping riff that is offset by its melancholy yet somehow upbeat chorus. Tonight is an effective power ballad. S.A.T.O.'s a song that I have never understood the acronym of, but it's also one of my personal favorite's on this album and one of the faster numbers overall. The title track is dire, lonely, hopeless and sick, which is probably just what John Osbourne was looking for.

I personally hold Diary to be just a notch below Blizzard, and that said the following grade is thus.
