Doom Unitin kakkoslätty The Burden of Bloom on miellyttävää kuunneltavaa. Sen takaavat hyvät biisinkirjoitustaidot, tarttuvat riffit ja siistit melodiat.

Jos minun pitäisi osoittaa bändistä jokin heikkous, uskaltaisin väittää, että laulaja pelaa levyllä vielä hieman varman päälle, mikä näkyy ja kuuluu. Ymmärrän kyllä baritonisen äänialan käytön, sillä kuulun samaan koulukuntaan itsekin, mutta muutamassa kohdin levy todella kaipaisi vokalistilta heittäytymistä ja ulvontaa rekisterin äärirajoilla. Tällainen hetki on esimerkiksi Cyclonessa (kohdassa 2:18). Mielikuvatasolla laulaja on tällöin kuin suuri ilotulitusraketti, joka mahtavan räjähdyksen sijaan päästää vain maltillisen märän poksahduksen. Jotain tästä siis vielä puuttuu.

Rock'n'rollin ei ikinä ollut tarkoitus olla varman päälle pelaamista, kuten Gene Simmons joskus totesi King's X -yhtyeestä. Bändi kuului ilmeisesti Genen suosikkeihin, mutta orkesteri ei ikinä lyönyt itseään kunnolla läpi, koska heidän musiikistaan puuttui vaaran tuntua. Doom Unitista voi tällä erää sanoa samaa. Ketä oikeasti kiinnostaa, jos joku kriitikko kommentoi vokalistin äänen rikkoontumisesta hetkenä, kun laulaja todella antautuu rockin raivon vietäväksi? Sano perässä: Robert Plant. Hän ei toden totta pysynyt joka hetki nuotissa vanhoilla Zeppelin-kiekoilla, mutta se ei kiinnosta ketään. Samaa voi sanoa Vince Neilin laulusta varhaisilla Mötley Crüe -lätyillä, eikä siihenkään kukaan kiinnitä huomiota.

Levyn parhaimpia paloja ovat Reckoning Day, A Grain of Sand, Cyclone ja tanakka Man on Wire. Kaiken kaikkiaan albumi on erittäin onnistunut ja suositeltava tapaus.

Doom Unit's sophomore effort The Burden of Bloom is a good listen. Solid songwriting, catchy riffs and nifty melodies all around.

If I were to take one weakness in this band, it would be that the vocalist plays it ”safe” in his vocal approach and it shows. I totally understand the baritone vocal range as I represent the same kind of singer, but there are points in the songs where you would really expect the frontman to wail at the top of his register, such as at 2:18 of Cyclone. I would equate this to a firecracker flying high skyward and then just when you expect a big boom all you'd get would be a moderate, wet pop. Something is wrong with the picture, if you get my meaning.

Rock and roll was never meant to be ”safe” as Gene Simmons once so aptly said about the band King's X. According to Gene, King's X was one of his favorites, but they had never broken out and made it big because they missed the element of danger. The same can be said of Doom Unit. Who honestly cares what the naysayers think if one's voice cracks or falls apart somewhat while exuding passion or flare in rock music? Can you say Robert Plant? He was hardly in key in several places on old Zeppelin albums, but no one cares. The same can be said for early Vince Neil on Crue albums, yet no one cares.

Some of the best cuts on this album are Reckoning Day, A Grain of Sand, Cyclone and the chunky Man on Wire. All in all, a very good effort and very recommendable.
